The Institute for Medical Informatics: Bridging medicine and technology
Evolving from the Medical Informatics Group (MIG) founded in January 2016, the Institute serves as a crucial link between medical/clinical questions and informatics solutions. Its primary focus lies in applied research and development projects across various areas of medical informatics. As part of the BMBF-funded MIRACUM project within the Medical Informatics Initiative, the IMI is collaborating with the IT department (DICT) of the University Hospital Frankfurt to implement a Data Integration Center (DIZ). Leveraging its extensive experience in supporting data-driven clinical research, the IMI works closely with the Center for Coordination of Clinical Trials in Oncology (CTCN) and the Interdisciplinary Biomaterial and Database Frankfurt (iBDF).
Advancing research in rare diseases
A significant portion of IMI’s projects focuses on the field of rare diseases. In partnership with the Frankfurt Reference Center for Rare Diseases (FRZSE), the Institute is continuing and further developing research projects such as se-atlas, ZIPSE, and OSSE. These initiatives are funded by the Federal Ministry of Health under the National Action Plan for People with Rare Diseases (NAMSE). The IMI’s involvement extends to European initiatives aimed at improving the treatment of patients with rare diseases. It is an integral part of the European Joint Project on Rare Diseases (EJP-RD) and serves as a technical partner for the European Reference Network for rare lung diseases (ERN Lung).
