Europeans receive red blood cells every year
experience short-term adverse events - the critical ones are often fatal
can develop antibodies potentially resulting in long-term immune abnormalities
The Registry Study for Research of Blood Donor and Recipient Long-Term Outcomes (LOS) is a pioneering project dedicated to understanding the long-term effects of blood transfusions and donations. This comprehensive, multi-centre study aims to improve patient outcomes and advance transfusion practice.
Physicians will enrol patients into the study and through simple and secure digital self-reporting, we will collect longitudinal health and well-being data at the individual patient level over a 30-year period. Using the standardised terminology SNOMED International, diagnoses and procedures will be interoperable with other datasets worldwide. Physicians will document the exact indication for transfusions – providing highly granular medical information. This innovative approach will allow us to gain important insights for improved clinical practice and shape future strategies and interventions based on reliable, long-term data.
We invite physicians, hospitals, universities, organisations, and health ministries to participate in our transformative project that prioritises scientific excellence and patient well-being. Our partners have access to the LOS Registry data in accordance with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and ethical standards. Become elected member of the LOS Scientific Board, join our General Assembly and contribute to the development of our science.
LOS encourages innovative data science approaches and expects numerous collaborative publications. Help us revolutionise transfusion medicine, advance public health and improve preparedness for health crises.
Empowering millions of patients on a lifelong health journey within our multi-stakeholder project, we can reveal the long-term impact of blood transfusions and drive digital transformation and patient engagement in healthcare.
